Burgandy blind wine tasting

We had blind wine tasting at Yusuke san’s house. He is one of sommelier I respect and taught me a lot! Today’s theme is…”Cote de Nuits”. Each of us had to bring a bottle of wine from Cote de nuits and as soon as we got to there we had to cover up the label not to show anybody! I was thrilled!

We took notes about each wine and guessed the region, wine maker and vintage. At the end, we all read out comments and showed the label one by one.

Easiest one was Chambolle Musigny because of its elegant character and we all guessed right. Guessing Vintage is so difficult…

All of them are made from the same grape”Pinot Noir” but taste very different. This is why Burgundy wine is so interesting and fascinates me a lot!

What we had were…

-2003 Nuits Saint Gerges / Fredric Magnin
It has powerful and concentrated flavour and aroma of black currant and cherry. The texture was velvety and jammy.

-2001 Gevery Chambertin 1er crus Combe aux Moines /Rene Leclerc
Aroma was earthy, and I also found faint leather, spices and mushrooms in fruits elements. The palate is powerful but smooth with mature tannin and there is plum and black currant. I thought it was a little bit elegant to be Gevery.

-2002 Chambolle Musigny / Pierre Bourée Fils
I could see the pale ruby with orange rim from the appearance. Aroma was very elegant and soft with red fruits like strawberries and raspberries. The palate is also elegant with silky texture.

-2008 Nuits Saint Gerges Les Deux Cerisiers / Domaine Laurent Pere et Fiis
It has rich and concentrated fruits aroma with a faint spices like nutmeg. The palate is still fresh with concentrated red to black fruits like plum and red currant.

Yusuke san has a wine cellar with great wines and he opened some of them for us! We were super excited and enjoyed a lot. He opened “1999-Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru / Camus Pere&Fils” It has bright ruby red with a little fade at the rim. Aroma is powerful but also elegant and matured with comport of cherry and currant. It was well-balanced with concentrated fruits, silky tannin and elegant acid.

And…”2000-Chateau Lascombes / Margaux” has complex aromas of spices, coffee and berries but still young. On the palate, I got earth, spice like anise, dark color fruits like black berry and black cherry. It has so much potential!

 ”2000-Chateau Lascombes / Margaux”

And…Special blend wine made by famous Japanese sommelier Mr.Tasaki and it was not even on the market!

It was great time to know and enjoy wines! Thank you very much Yusuke san!

Wine festival@Manns winery

I went to “Manns winery” in Komoro-City with my parents and grandparents. Manns winery holds this harvest festival once a year in October.

Wine was very fresh and light body, so it was just right for drinking on the grass! I hope we can spread “casual wine-drinking “throughout Japan through these kinds of events.

At this event, you can get a wine glass(¥500) with plenty of white or red wine. When you finish one, you can have more with the glass and it only costs ¥50 for another glass of wine!(it was free of charge before though...)

In the winery, there is beautiful Japanese garden and underground wine cellar in the corner. It only opens for special occasion and you can enjoy high-grade wine like “SOLARIS” in the cellar. There were 2 options for tasting, one was ¥500 for a glass, and the other one was ¥500 for 2 glasses.(depends on the grade)

Of course I tried some SOLARIS series since I was at Manns winery! I had Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot…I liked Merlot the best because it is well-suited with the solid and climate here in Nagano.

After I tried SOLARIS, I thought Japanese wine has a lot of potential. However on the other side, good Japanese wine is as expensive as great premier cru wine…I think this is why it is hard to be popular as other country’s wines.
After we enjoyed a lot of wines, we went to "Kumoba-Ike" in Karuizawa to see beautiful leaves turned red in autumn.
It was amazingly beautiful and no words to say...
We have beautiful views that changes of the season and I think it is the greatest thing in Japan!
